Keeping Staff

Have seen some interesting discussion recently about keeping staff.
As usual salary was not the top motivator.
Some of the views expressed plus my own include:-

Treating people as intelligent adults and empowering them as such

Stretch their capabilities and move them into new spaces or out of their comfort zone (Word of warning here - This would need to be accompanied by good support structures or you will have the opposite effect!)

Allow Creativity

Create an environment where people can flourish

Make work fun whilst working hard

Provide rewards but not necessarily pay.

Acknowledge success

Look at the culture and ensure it is blame free.

Create a training plan to give people a road map for growth

Be honest and open

Trust people

Give feedback

Mentor

Provide an appraisal process that is not just an annual tick in the box but a living document frequently used. Consider 360 (views of your peers) assessment where applicable.

Tackle problems as they occur and dont leave them to fester

Team working

Let me know if you disagree or haver any others

Great list. It's refreshing when top management sees and promotes this type of individual concern.

First Break All the Rules points to the relationship between a worker and his boss as the #1 reason for a worker to stay or leave their job.

Personally, I think all managers should go through Gallup / Buckingham's Strengths material to open the eyes of both sides to what the strengths of the worker are. My teams have appreciated it, and it has changed the way I relate to them, task them and work together on roles, opportunities and career growth.

More on strengths here
