I think that the proactive business person will realise that there are big advantages to be had with minimal expenditure on web site usability and efficiency. Download time is one of the biggest killers. Many businesses can improve their conversion without increasing advertising spend or web site traffic.

As a CIO in the US DoD sector one of the business shifts I find myself leading at is in improvements in Strategic Planning, Capital Planning Investment Control, Performance Management, and Enterprise Risk Management - for organizational mission investments - as well as the IT domain. Improvements in the application of this holistic governance model has led to improvements in each area of governance - a better business framework, more strategically focused, and prepared for the reduction in funding we all expect to see over the next few years.

That leads me to believe my title should be 'Chief Influence Officer'. Trying to keep myself relevant!

Hi Peter I want to add that at this time the role of the CIO, more than anything, is about leadership and keeping the ship steady. It takes nerves of steel, but thats why CIOs are paid well (aren't they?) The CIO must keep the IT and Operations departments feeling positive and motivated; not an easy job but not impossible

I agree Peter I think cost cutting must be done carefully. In fact I hate the term - I like to look at it as challenging my effectiveness and efficiency. Sometimes reducing cost isn't the best result. Increasing business value is always the best result!
In my experience. the best way of managing expectations of a team is to talk about value. Value is a dimension that everyone understands.

Well Peter I tend to favour the more optimistic outcome.
Recently I came across an interesting article that states 62% of IT decision makers to increase security spending this year – That money has to come from somewhere & I don’t believe most of it will go straight into their pockets. Those however who do utilize that money in an innovative way and can justify a return – will most likely reap the benefits.

Another article I came across mentioned that many in the know will seriously be considering an in-depth look at SAAS solutions for the benefits they bring to table like: Lower admin overhead, Increased performance, gain a knowledgeable partner, empowering IT dept to better focus on tasks relating to companies direction ect.

So to conclude I believe the IT sector will triumph as it main function is just making life that much easier, but it’s nothing without the people behind IT.
